Explore the Art of Ikebana – A Journey into Japanese Flower Arranging

This course is designed for those who feel more comfortable with English than Swedish.

Under the guidance of our skilled ikebanist, you will delve into the traditional art of flower arranging, where every detail and line tells a story. Ikebana, which translates to "giving life to flowers," focuses on balance, harmony, and creating a dialogue between nature and humanity.

Course Content

This course combines inspiring theory with practical creativity. We begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of ikebana and the principles of Japanese aesthetics. Then, you’ll have the opportunity to create your own arrangement following the Sogetsu school's guidelines – a modern and creative interpretation of ikebana. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, you’ll leave with new skills and the flowers from the course so that you can create a new, unique floral arrangement at home.

Let your creativity bloom!

Course Materials

Flowers are included in the course fee. Flower frogs, vases, and tools will be provided for use during the session. After the course, you get to take your floral creations home.

We meet on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Medborgarskolan’s venue at Hagagatan 23A.

Medborgarskolan and Public Education (Folkbildning)

Medborgarskolan is a humanistic educational association dedicated to helping individuals grow and develop. We offer a wide range of courses, a vibrant music program, and partnerships with organizations and groups in various fields. Participants come from all ages, backgrounds, and interests, with our primary focus on public education and non-formal education.

What is Public Education (Folkbildning)?
Public education or folkbildning provides opportunities to gain knowledge outside traditional schools. It takes place in settings such as libraries, folk high schools, study associations, and through lectures. The goal is to create opportunities for everyone in society to acquire new skills and develop new perspectives in a democratic and inclusive way.

This form of education adapts courses and study circles to the interests and needs of participants. It is always voluntary and free from government control but has played a significant role in Sweden's education and cultural policies. It broadens understanding in areas beyond professional or academic topics, helping people navigate and make sense of society.

The content of public education (folkbildning) evolves with time, reflecting societal changes and individual needs. In today's information-driven world, it helps us process and structure overwhelming amounts of data, see the bigger picture, and improve our quality of life. Public education (folkbildning) also fosters tolerance and understanding of the unfamiliar, emphasizing a holistic view of life and the world.
