In 1625 middle aged bachelor Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange was pressured into a marriage with his cousin Amalia von Solms-Braunfels to secure the succession. Their union not only produced the desired offspring but was also highly successful in other respects. Aided and often advised by his shrewd wife, Frederik Hendrik proved an effective political and military leader of the United Netherlands in the final stages of the Eighty Years War with Spain. And the couple succeeded in elevating the status of the House of Orange-Nassau in royal Europe, building magnificent residences and conducting an ambitious dynastic marriage policy.
